FAMILY WOES: WHY EBONY’S COSBY COVER HITS HOME

When Ebony magazine unveiled its November 2015 cover issue, jaws literally dropped. A classic portrait of “The Cosby Show” fictional family, The Huxtables, smiling is punctuated by a seemingly broken glass frame. The root of the crack spreading from the face of the family’s adored patriarch: Cliff Huxtable. Or the man behind the character, Bill Cosby, depending on how you interpret the image. Upon first reviewing the cover, it doesn’t take long before concluding the magazine is going there. For the “Family Issue,” Ebony  says it “explores the intensely complicated relationship between the fallen icon, his most beloved character and the broken… Continue Reading

WHAT IS BLACK MEN’S BEEF WITH BLACK WOMEN?

Black men have seemingly declared war on Black women, and it’s getting real. It’s no secret that the battle of the sexes is something that’s existed since Adam blamed Eve for biting that godforsaken forbidden fruit. For centuries,  men and women have been at odds over their biological and psychological differences, both legitimate and naught. For men and women of color, however, the stakes seem to be at an all-time high. Whether it’s baby mama vs. baby daddy drama or the delicate topic of dating outside one’s race, Black men and Black women just can’t seem to see to eye… Continue Reading

SHAME ON BLACK PEOPLE WHO EMBRACE ‘ALL LIVES MATTER’

The recently coined “All Lives Matters” slogan may sound harmless from a distance. Who wouldn’t agree that life breathed into any human being is valuable? But when used amid the racially volatile climate America is in it right now, it would behoove any logical, well-meaning person to understand that All Lives Matter is nothing but a slap in the face to the “Black Lives Matter” movement and all that it stands for. It’s particularly disturbing when the argument for All Lives Matter is co-signed by Black people themselves. Exhibits A and B: Raven-Symoné and Terry McMillan, author of “Waiting To Exhale.” The two… Continue Reading

Raven-Symone Says She’s Not African-American, Why It’s Problematic

Raven-Symone has declared war on labels. During an interview with Oprah Winfrey, the former child star touched on her sexuality and race, categorically rejecting being called gay or African-American. “I’m tired of being labeled. I want to be labeled a human who loves humans,” Symone said, admitting that she is in love with her partner, who is a woman. “I don’t need language. I don’t need a categorizing statement for it.” “I’m an American, I’m not an African-American,” the “Cosby Show” star added. “I don’t know where my roots go to. I don’t know what country in Africa I’m from…but I do know… Continue Reading

Author Zane Talks Career, Race and Sexuality [Exclusive]

Gerren Keith Gaynor interviews author Zane for Centric: Unless you’ve been living under a rock you know that when it comes to erotica novels, author Zane is the genre’s reigning queen. Over the last 15 years, she’s published 30 books and has had her signature no-holds-barred literary sexcapades turned into the television series “Zane’s Sex Chronicles.” And on Oct. 10, the author will be entering a new medium when her New York Times best-selling novel “Addicted” makes its film debut in theaters nationwide. But even with her massive success, Zane admits she’s noticed the limitations of her career as a Black writer. With the… Continue Reading

The Danger In Nicki Minaj and Big Booty Culture

Everyone is talking about Nicki Minaj’s butt. Ever since the female rapper released the cover art for her new single “Anaconda” (pictured above) – which shows her squating, backed turned to the camera in a g-string, with her ass in full view – many took Minaj to task for exploiting her body for music sales and shock value. While it’s no different than all the other times the female rapper got attention for her assets, this go around seems to be a public outcry against what some consider to be a gimmick executed one too many times by the rapper and,… Continue Reading

The Sexism, Racism Behind Black Hair In Entertainment and Sports

Via CentricTV.com: While almost the entire country had their eyes glued to television sets to watch Super Bowl XLVIII, others were paying closer attention to Fox Sports news reporter Pam Oliver’s hair. The 19-year veteran is one of the few women in sports broadcast, especially among women of color, and despite being an intelligent, pioneering woman in sports news, the only thing the public seemed to focus on was what’s on her head, rather than what’s inside it. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time the Florida A&M University alum has been under the microscope for her outer appearance. Whether it’s her… Continue Reading

The ‘N-Word’ and ‘Queer’ Debate: To Use Or Not To Use

Recently, I wrote a commentary on CentricTV.com about news anchor Robin Roberts’ coming out and posed the question (also the headline) “Will Robin Roberts’ Coming Out Shatter Stereotypes of Black Queer Women?” To my surprise, my editor brought to my attention some backlash from Centric’s Facebook page, where my article had been shared. Many of the Facebook users took issue with the use of the word “queer.” Some argued that referring to Roberts as queer was disrespectful and demeaning. “I hope in 2014 we stop using the word “queer”? Shame on you Centric tv!!,” one user wrote. My editor and I… Continue Reading

EBONY: ‘Kanye West and the Black Man’s Burden’

Check out my latest opinion piece on EBONY.com… With the country’s divisiveness as of late, one thing we all can agree on is that Kanye West is a bit much. Even President Barack Obama agrees. Once again, the controversial Chicagoan has made headlines for tussling with a paparazzo for his camera outside the LAX airport, because the pap broke Kanye’s golden rule: do not talk to him…ever! Now, ‘Ye may be facing felony charges for attempted robbery. On the surface, this is a classic case of someone trying to get a little cash for his troubles (it’s reported the cameraman also suffered… Continue Reading

Black Students Less Likely To Hook Up Than White Students

Contrary to the long withstanding belief that Black youth are hyper-sexualized and mischievous, studies conclude that African-American college students are less likely to party and hook up than their white counterparts. Lingering racism may be a contributing factor in the decision-making of Black students, according to a report by Slate. Because Blacks have been traditionally stereotyped as hypersexual, it’s hypothesized that they choose not to engage in too much sexual activity in risk of falling in line with that convention. Slate reports: African-American students are less likely to hook up than white students. Sociological studies suggest that lingering racism plays… Continue Reading
