THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING FRIENDS OUT YOUR DATING LIFE

There’s no true rulebook for a successful relationship, but there are certainly preventative measures one can take to ensure its survival. One of the surest ways to send your relationship up in flames is to allow other people in it. Serena Williams could not learn that any quicker following rumors her gal pals are cautioning her to take things slow with Drake. Allegedly they think the rapper, based on their past dating history, has a healthy appetite for the ladies and do not believe he’s capable of being faithful to Serena. By the looks of it, Williams could care less what… Continue Reading

‘SNL’ Proves Why Drake Is Bigger Than Hip-Hop

Many tuned in to the latest episode of Saturday Night Live to see Drake host and perform – or to see the premiere of the show’s newest and only Black comedienne Sasheer Zamata, which was clearly secretly what people really watched for. But what’s clear is that Drake hands-down stole the show. His skits – which included impersonations of A-Rod, Lil’ Wayne and Jay-Z – were not only spot on but actually quite humorous. While Drake is often touted as hip-hop’s next in line to the throne, the 27-year-old – who once starred in the television series Degrassi during his teens… Continue Reading

Report: Future To Sue Drake For $1.5 Million Over Getting Kicked Off Tour

Why can’t we all just get along? According to a report by PageSix, Future and Drake are feuding over a jab Future made towards Drake’s new album, causing the Toronto rapper to kick Future off his concert tour. The saga all began last week when Billboard quoted Future on his opinions on Drake’s new album, Nothing Was The Same. “Drake made an album that is full of hits but it doesn’t grab you. They’re not possessive; they don’t make you feel the way I do,” Future said. Future’s reps immediately chided Billboard for taking Future’s comment out of context, and added… Continue Reading

New Music: Drake Ft. Jay-Z ‘Pound Cake’ and ‘Paris Morton Music 2’

Tracks are being leaked left and right from Drake’s upcoming album, Nothing Was The Same, which will be released on Sept. 24. Two of them includes “Pound Cake” featuring JAY-Z and “Paris Morton Music 2.” On the HOV-assisted Pound Cake, Drake spits over a chill and stoic production, where he exults his rap preeminence (“With my ink I can murder, word to my nigga Irv.”) “My classmates they went on to be charted accounts or work with their parents/But thinking back bout how they treated me, my high school reunion might be worth an appearance/Make everybody have to go through security,”… Continue Reading

XXL: Macklemore Wins Big, Jay-Z a No-Show at 2013 MTV VMA’s

Check out my XXL recap of the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards: With plenty of stars in tow, last night’s MTV Video Music Awards entered a terrain it had yet to explore. Hosted at the less-than-year-old Barclays Center in Brooklyn, this year’s VMA’s were supremely significant to hip-hop’s growth, with the red carpet lining the streets where the likes of Biggie, Jay Z and Big Daddy Kane all got their start. As expected, this year’s VMA’s marked a great night for rap music, packed with surprise performances and notable appearances. Early on, Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz hit the stage to… Continue Reading

NEW SONG: Drake Goes Retro With ‘Hold On We’re Going Home’

Yet another new Drake track has been released. This time the OVO rapper goes retro in a 80s-inspired “Hold On We’re Going Home.” Drake puts pause on bars and opts for singing on this smooth love track on wax. Take a listen to “Hold On We’re Going Home” below: Usually I don’t mind Drake singing, but on this song there’s no personality and the melody sort of goes nowhere. I get that he, along with Nicki Minaj, love to sing, but sometimes he can take it a little overboard. Still, I am excited for Drake’s upcoming album, Nothing Was The… Continue Reading

J. Cole Apologizes for Offensive Lyric About Autism

J. Cole made an official apology to those living with autism and their families for his offensive lyric in a new song with Drake called, “Jodeci Freestyle.” The North Carolina rapper said in a blog post that while he takes issue with recent trends of pressuring rappers to apologize for their artistic freedom, he admits that he went too far. “To the parents who are fighting through the frustrations that must come with raising a child with severe autism, finding strength and patience that they never knew they had; to the college student with Asperger’s syndrome; to all those overcoming… Continue Reading

New Music: Drake Gets Sensitive With ‘On My Way’ (Ft. James Fauntleroy)

If you’re itching for new Drake music, look no further. A new track “On My Way” featuring The Y‘s James Fauntleroy. Seemingly produced by The Y’s (credited for Drake’s Girls Love Beyonce), On My Way is a melodic trance that takes a step away from the bars and falls in line with Drake’s more sensitive side. Listen to the two crooners in action: While I know Drake as rapper gets a lot of flack for his singing, I have to say that when he does it’s still inherently hip-hop. Though this song seems a bit unfinished, I wonder if it’s… Continue Reading

Not About That Life: Is Hip-Hop a Culture of Inauthenticity?

Everyone knows that hip-hop music often gets flack for glorifying violence, misogyny, homophobia and the like, but very little is hip-hop held accountable for its inauthenticity. In an interview with Hardknock TV, rapper and actor Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson touched on hip-hop artists and being authentic about the things in which they rap about. “I don’t like when [rappers] are fronting,” he said, “When you’re writing about something you’re not.” See below around 7 minutes and 30 sec: The rapper also said that if a rapper didn’t go through any “rough spots” in his life – presumably a life on… Continue Reading
