CASE OF THE EX: WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PARTNER IS STILL HOLDING ON

Mya was certainly onto something with her 2000 hit “Case of the Ex.” Dealing with a man or woman who keeps in touch with their ex feels sort of like being an emotional third wheel. Simply put: it sucks. But there are levels to the case of the ex. There’s the ex your lover periodically checks in with to see how they’re doing. The ex who can’t seem to let go or take no for an answer. And then there’s the ex who seemingly still holds a special place in your man’s heart; you know the one who left all… Continue Reading

HOW BERSHAN SHAW TURNED BREAST CANCER TO A LIFE’S CAREER [EXCLUSIVE]

Being diagnosed with breast cancer was a devastating blow for Bershan Shaw. At just 33, she was faced with a reality no woman is ever prepared for. “You should be living your life. You should be thinking about your career, marriage, kids…not breast cancer,” Shaw tells Centric of her 2007 diagnosis. Though she underwent successful radiation, two years later her cancer came back. This time at stage 4. “I walked out [the doctor’s office] and said ‘I will live.’ I got on my knees outside the door and was like ‘God, please let me be a vessel,” Shaw recalls. “Let me… Continue Reading

DINING ETIQUETTE: HOW SHOULD YOU SPLIT THE BILL?

One of the most common dilemmas in dining out is when the actual bill comes to the table. Suddenly all parties are left with the task of trying to determine how they should split the bill. Do you split it evenly or divvy up the cost according to who ordered what (on non-dates of course)?   While the question may seem trivial in nature, quite a few experts and opinionated writers have provided their own analysis on the matter. In fact, Forbes points out a 2004 academic study called “The Inefficiency of Splitting the Bill,” which stated that there’s a… Continue Reading

FAMILY WOES: WHY EBONY’S COSBY COVER HITS HOME

When Ebony magazine unveiled its November 2015 cover issue, jaws literally dropped. A classic portrait of “The Cosby Show” fictional family, The Huxtables, smiling is punctuated by a seemingly broken glass frame. The root of the crack spreading from the face of the family’s adored patriarch: Cliff Huxtable. Or the man behind the character, Bill Cosby, depending on how you interpret the image. Upon first reviewing the cover, it doesn’t take long before concluding the magazine is going there. For the “Family Issue,” Ebony  says it “explores the intensely complicated relationship between the fallen icon, his most beloved character and the broken… Continue Reading

NEW MAGAZINE WANTS BLACK WOMEN TO KNOW THEY ARE ENOUGH

“Nobody cares about Black women.” Those were the words that ignited fire in the belly of Qimmah Saafir to finally go out on faith with launching her own magazine for Black women. The statement came from an industry insider who started a number of magazines in the market. A casual conversation about diversity in the magazine business led to a sobering reality. “I realized nobody else cares about this. Nobody else is going to do this for us, so why not just do it?” she says. And then the conception of Hannah magazine was born. The biannual glossy seeks to give… Continue Reading

OUR BLACK WOMEN IDOLS ARE HUMAN TOO

We love Sanaa Lathan. And we most certainly LOVE Serena Williams. Aside from being drop-dead gorgeous with killer bodies, the two women represent Black female excellence to the highest degree in entertainment and sports. Serena has more championship trophies than Beyoncé has Grammys. And Sanaa’s acting credits include some of the culture’s biggest blockbusters, not to mention she’s the star and executive producer of America’s No. 1 film The Perfect Guy. Though they are every woman’s idol by all accounts, both ladies got a little heat this week for decisions they’ve made that some felt were not becoming of the… Continue Reading

THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING FRIENDS OUT YOUR DATING LIFE

There’s no true rulebook for a successful relationship, but there are certainly preventative measures one can take to ensure its survival. One of the surest ways to send your relationship up in flames is to allow other people in it. Serena Williams could not learn that any quicker following rumors her gal pals are cautioning her to take things slow with Drake. Allegedly they think the rapper, based on their past dating history, has a healthy appetite for the ladies and do not believe he’s capable of being faithful to Serena. By the looks of it, Williams could care less what… Continue Reading

WHAT IS BLACK MEN’S BEEF WITH BLACK WOMEN?

Black men have seemingly declared war on Black women, and it’s getting real. It’s no secret that the battle of the sexes is something that’s existed since Adam blamed Eve for biting that godforsaken forbidden fruit. For centuries,  men and women have been at odds over their biological and psychological differences, both legitimate and naught. For men and women of color, however, the stakes seem to be at an all-time high. Whether it’s baby mama vs. baby daddy drama or the delicate topic of dating outside one’s race, Black men and Black women just can’t seem to see to eye… Continue Reading

WHY NICKI MINAJ’S PROVOCATIVE WAX FIGURE IS PROBLEMATIC [COMMENTARY]

Nicki Minaj achieved yet another great feat in her career with her very first wax figure at the Madame Tussauds museum in Las Vegas. This makes the Queens MC the first female rapper to do so. Minaj, 32, celebrated the achievement on her Instagram, calling the wax figure “iconic.” The life-like figurine depicts Minaj on all fours with her now famous booty tooted in the upright position. The depiction replicates the rapper’s controversial “Anaconda” video, in which she and a team of dancers shake their butts in female solidarity. In just 11 days it got over 100 million views. But while… Continue Reading
