WHO SHARES THE REALITY BURDEN IN THE PLIGHT OF BLACK WOMEN?

The debate on Black women and how they are represented–or rather misrepresented–on reality television is one that is old and tired, yet continues to be the topic of discussion as networks continue to crank out shows that do less uplifting and more stereotyping. On any given Sunday or Monday night you’re sure to see beautiful, yet flawed women of color bickering over trivial drama, cat fighting over men and perpetuating the far too common “mean girl” persona. After nearly a decade of low-brow style reality television shows from “Flavor of Love” to “Love & Hip-Hop,” we’ve seen the plight of… Continue Reading

WOULD WE BELIEVE BILL COSBY RAPE ALLEGATIONS IF ACCUSERS WERE BLACK?

While sitting in the chair at the barbershop in Harlem, undoubtedly the much-discussed Bill Cosby rape allegations came up in conversation among barbers and patrons. Unsurprisingly, the scandal sparked a debate surrounding the credibility of the accusers (so far three of 15 women have come forward publicly) and the overall opinions of whether they believed Cosby–Black America’s quintessential father figure–was capable of sexual assault. The inability of the room–which included majority men and a handful of women–to entertain the idea that the women, all white, who have publicly accused the famed comedian could actually be telling the truth, points to… Continue Reading

WHY DO BLACK WOMEN HATE ALICIA KEYS?

When it comes to Black women in the entertainment industry, Alicia Keys appears to be the consummate role model. In addition to being one of the most successful and inspirational R&B singers in modern history–selling over 65 million albums and singles worldwide and earning 15 Grammy awards–Keys has become one of the world’s greatest philanthropists. In nearly 15 years, she has dedicated her money and time to global initiatives geared toward AIDS awareness, reducing global poverty, and relief for victims of Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Haiti, among others. Her most recent song “We Are Here” even attempts to… Continue Reading

Raven-Symone Says She’s Not African-American, Why It’s Problematic

Raven-Symone has declared war on labels. During an interview with Oprah Winfrey, the former child star touched on her sexuality and race, categorically rejecting being called gay or African-American. “I’m tired of being labeled. I want to be labeled a human who loves humans,” Symone said, admitting that she is in love with her partner, who is a woman. “I don’t need language. I don’t need a categorizing statement for it.” “I’m an American, I’m not an African-American,” the “Cosby Show” star added. “I don’t know where my roots go to. I don’t know what country in Africa I’m from…but I do know… Continue Reading

The Danger In Nicki Minaj and Big Booty Culture

Everyone is talking about Nicki Minaj’s butt. Ever since the female rapper released the cover art for her new single “Anaconda” (pictured above) – which shows her squating, backed turned to the camera in a g-string, with her ass in full view – many took Minaj to task for exploiting her body for music sales and shock value. While it’s no different than all the other times the female rapper got attention for her assets, this go around seems to be a public outcry against what some consider to be a gimmick executed one too many times by the rapper and,… Continue Reading

Where R. Kelly Went Wrong In Response To Transgender Teen

My commentary via CentricTV.com… Is R. Kelly ashamed of his transgender teen? That’s what inquiring minds wanted to know when the megastar singer remained radio silent after news broke that his child, Jay Kelly, 13, had publicly identified as transgender. “R. Kelly’s Daughter Turns Male” read one of the many eye-catching headlines that dominated the news cycle for weeks. So when word got out that R. Kelly had publicly commented on his personal family matter, many were eager to learn the singer’s thoughts. But rather than using his public, wide-reaching platform to unequivocably declare his support of his child’s decision to stand in… Continue Reading

Necole Bitchie: More Than Just A Blogger [Exclusive]

Check out my very personal interview with celebrity blogger Necole Kane of NecoleBitchie.com. It’s by far one of my favorites: Two minutes into her interview with CentricTV.com, Necole Kane, widely known by the moniker “Necole Bitchie,” is in tears. “Damn. Every time someone brings up my parents…” she says before stopping mid sentence to dry her eyes. The famous blogger’s mom and dad both died at the age of 42, just two years apart from each other and, as expected, it’s something that remains a soft spot. In fact, death has become quite a devastating theme in her life. Before her… Continue Reading

Stop Silencing Women: Why Domestic Violence Is No Laughing Matter

Via CentricTV.com: Domestic violence has taken center stage yet again in the press thanks to D.L. Hughley’s major fail of a joke when he called Columbus Short’s wife Tanee McCall-Short “thirsty” on his morning radio show, because she accused her husband of being physically abusive. Instead of treating it as a serious news story, Hughley decided to spew a rather sexist rant about how she was a “b*tch” who was going to “f*ck her money up” by causing Short to lose his job. There were many things problematic about Hughley’s scathing words. Other than the obvious misogyny and degradation of calling another woman out… Continue Reading
